I would say a Janome, because I have two of their machines and I love mine.

I love my Janome and always recommend their machines to my friends. But recently at a quilt class I got to try out a fancy Baby Lock model and it was nice too. Worth a try if you haven't used one.
I sew on a 1953 Singer and will eventually need something else--I'd really like a zigzag stitch, for instance! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Janome and Bernina. I have friends with both, and they are fiercely loyal!

I've only been sewing a year or so and only on my Bernina activa 140 which I love. My mom keeps offering to visit her "sewing machine guy" to upgrade but I see no reason why I should!

I've been using a Babylock Elizabeth for a year and I like it. I'd like to hear more about the Janomes - it seems like they are the "cool" machine these days!
I think everyone should try a Pfaff. Their built in dual feed foot is the best...as is their 1/4" foot (without the flange).
I use a bernina, maybe it is something for you, too.
I just bought the Juki 2010Q and I absolutely love it! The owls are wonderful!

Why not review some bargain machines (less than 500$ range) for the quilter on a budget? When I bought my little Janome it was really hard to find any reviews that weren't about the thousand-dollar machines.

Try a mini-Janome - it's not a full-time machine; I use mine to travel with (I travel for work a lot). It does the basic job, but it's a bit loud and not very fast.
But, it's 5 lbs, and fits in my suitcase (major plus).
I want to see someone else's opinion on this, though.

I have an old Kenmore that I love, I don't know much about new machines honestly.
I just bought last summer a Husquvarna and love it. My two friends have Baby Locks. I am going to buy another one this summer but probably will buy another Husquvarna so all my attachments will work on both. A sewing machine is a hard one to choose.
I have a Janome, and I am not a fan, too many frustrating issues. So I guess, I recommend what not to try. :)
I am not an expert seamstress by any means. I have a handmedown Brother, and wish I had something that would run smoothly. I was to know about sergers though, especially inexpensive ones.

I'm actually trying to figure out what kind of machine to buy - I'm so lost! My last machine was a Singer, and I've been told that Janome or Babylock is a good way to go.

I got a new machine 1 year ago and I asked a friend who owns a shop and does alterations, for her advice. She told me to get a Janome 6600. I did and love it!
I have a Janome Memory Craft 6300 and am absolutely in love with it. Try that or the 6600 :)
I really like my Brother NX-2000. It works great for me and can go through tons of fabric layers.

I sewed on a Kenmore for years until my hubby bought my Bernina. I would recommend trying the Bernina. Mine does not have bells and whistles, but it sews so great! I Love it!
I just finished an owl rag quilt! I love owls on fabric :) I have a pinterest board dedicated to it. I did pin yours too :) I have a Pfaff and I love it, but it would be cool to get some advice on the newer models and maybe the ones that also have an embroidery feature (mine does not). I've been thinking about the future :)
Bernina With stitch regulator. NOTHING sews like a Bernina, nothing. I am on my second! It is a paths Aurora 440.
I have a Janome Horizon, love it. The hard work I do on a Pfaff 260 from the early sixties. Maybe try some vintage machines!

I've been drooling over the new Brother Dreamweaver series...I've no idea if their sewing and quilting version works one whit better than my cheapie Brother CS 6000i, though. The throat size is a few inches wider, which is a plus for quilting, but other than that, I'm unsure if it justifies spending that much more money than my current one cost. I'd be interested in an impartial comparison.
If you like to sew bags and heavier projects, Singer 4423.

I've got a Pfaff Quilter's Expression 4.0, and it was a bit bitchy at FMQ in the beginning. I'd be interested in how you set the machine to FMQ without broken threads.

I have a Bernina QE440 and I love it. I would recommend that you try a Bernina, but I believe they have came out with a newer one that might have a bigger throat area.

I don't know. My machine is an inexpensive brother. It would be nice to have a really nice machine but for now I am just happy to have a machine that works.

I'd like you to try a very old Singer sewing machine, this ones that work without electricity. When you get used to it you'd love how it feels, so strong, so simple. It's great.

My sewing machine is a very cheap SilverCrest, whilst I wouldn't recommend it to advanced sewers, it works for me :)
I've been looking for a new machine, so the Adultery series sounds like just what I need. In particular I'm interested in throat space info. For some reason almost none of the manufacturers make that information available as part of their standard model info, so it's been really frustrating trying to do research online.
I would love to see you try out the Sweet Sixteen or the Tiara FMQ machines! (drool)

I have a Singer I've had for 20 years, I also learned to sew on one.
I'd look at Bernina, Janome, Babylock, Pfaff. All have something to offer with items on your wish list. The Juki 2010Q if you just want a piecing/quilting machine. I currently sew/quilt on a Janome 8900 (purchased at Quiltcon). Yes, I like it VERY much, and I had done a lot of research and testing on it before purchase. Serious machine adultery, coming from the Bernina world.
I own a Viking machine. It's actually the only one I've ever used. I look forward to seeing your reviews.
The only machine I'm familiar with is the Pfaff Tipmatic that I use. I think it's about 20 years old. It's a great little machine but it doesn't have many of the features other people talk about and that I wish I had. So, I don't know what you should try. I'm interested in trying a Juki but I would like it to be a 2nd machine ... provided I was wealthy enough and had space enough to own 3 good machines! Ha!

I love my newish Janome Horizon 7700. That 11" of space between needle and body makes it possible for me to free-motion quilt large quilts. Thanks for the giveaway chance!

I was going to suggest Janome Horizon because that is the machine I want (mainly based on the troat size). But I see that is the one you wrote about. You bring up a good point about computerized machines possibly not lasting as long due to too many things that can go wrong. I have to think about that now. I am curious how the lower end ones in the same line compare both in features and price tag. I haven't bothered to go check them out as there is no way on earth we can afford one of these right now.
I love my Bernina. It's 20 years old and froze up on me for the 1st time this year. It'll sew anything and I have used and abused it, traveled with it, treated it shamefully and trust and love it.
Try a singler quantum XL6000 - i wonder if you have the same problems I do.
I'm lovin that flannel! I'm a vintage Singer girl. I learned to sew on a Golden Touch and Sew in 1973! Now I prefer the older ones from the 1930's - 1950's.
I would say try a Janome Threadbanger.
I love my Janome machines. I would love to hear about a Janome that has lots of room for quilting (I have no idea if there is a Janome long-arm machine or not).

I think you should do a offshoot looking at vintage machines. I sew on a Singer 301 and I would put it up against any new machine for a straight stitch.
I have a pretty basic Kenmore; it's nothing to get excited about.

Oh my gosh, I don't even know. I use a 25 yr old Singer that's not fancy but it's a workhorse. I'll tune in to see your reviews though. My mom's a big Bernina fan if that helps!

I just got a Singer Quantum9960..it is okay, but the threading is terrible! Constantly having to thread it...and to wind a bobbin...unthread the whole thing, wind and then rethread! And it is always coming unthreaded out of the needle unless yo have the needle set just right (which is HARD) up. If not, it comes unthreaded! I'll be interested in hearing what others say for when I buy a new one!
I have an old sewing machine from a german brand called Privileg. It is good, it works, but it has no automatic programs. I sewed on a Bernina as well, but it was also a very old one... so I cannot tell you anything new.

As a new quilter I didn't want to spend much on a machine so I bought a Brother CS6000i. It is nice machine but it didn't take long before I realized I really need to upgrade. I would love to get a Bernina or Janome. I just found out that my mother-in-law has a Singer Featherweight and is giving to me when we visit next month. I am sooo excited. I love my Janome MC 6200 (or maybe it is 6300). It has a 9" throat, knee light, needle up/down, power button--all things my old machine didn't have.

I have the Babylock Ellisimo it is a sewing & machine embroidery machine. I love it as it is dual purpose and has a super huge bed with lots of room and tons of decorative stitching and alphabets built in perefect for quilt labels. Thank you for the chance to enter your giveaway.

I just got a viking husylock (on clearance since it is a discontinued serger model). Any help with one of those would be supper-- sergers are hard!!

I have a Pfaff and just enjoy it. It is the elemental I think... walking foot and computer and I am a happy camper.
I would also recommend a janome. I have a janome serger which I love, and my next purchase will hopefully be a janome coverstitch machine.

Ok, everyone has asked you to try out some really nice machines so I'm going to throw a spanner in the works. My friends are all starting to sew and have low budgets for machines. They all want to buy something under the £100 mark, which doesn't give much choice, whilst i would always recommend a second hand machine at this price, they tend to want new and many are leaning towards the Ikea Sy sewing machine. It looks like a toy to me, but i haven't tried it out. I'd love an neutral viewpoint of it!
I loved reading about the Juki, which is the one I would be especially interested in. Maybe the new Pfaff Expression 4.2. I have a 3.0 which I love, but wish it had a few more bells and whistles.
I would say Janome...I bought my first machine this past October, an older model Brother. It works well enough but I like to hear about the newer machines so I can figure out which kind I want to get when I can afford a new one. Thanks for the chance!

Oh dear, I really have no idea what other machines are out there. I own a pretty much brand new Singer Confidence that I only bought in December and also a vintage Privileg (cover up for Bernina and Victoria machines).

I'd love for you to find one of the vaunted featherweights to see if they are as amazing as people say. It'd be interesting to see how the Husqvarna's are holding up as well. My mother's computerized/electric one is a fabulous beast that is about 18 years old and still sews like a charm. But Husqvarna no longer makes them, they sold the sewing division years ago to someone else, don't remember who.

I have an Elna 2310. I like it though it can be finicky at times - mostly that comes down to operator error and not taking the time to check my settings to the manual and missing something.
I love my sapphire but she has attitude. I wonder if it's just mine.

I have a Husquvarna (sp?) ruby deluxe and I LOVE IT...it is the coolest machine! I just got it in Jan. I also have a 15 year old kenmore that I LOVE and a brother embroidery machine (project runway edition) it is broken right now, but it works great!! Thanks for the chance!
I have a Janome 6600 which I don't love as much as others do. That may be because I used to have a Husqvarna that I loved before it died. The 6600 is still a pretty nice machine and cost 1/3 what he Husqvarna did. I guess I would like to see a review of the 6600 if you haven't already done it.

I have been a long time Singer fan. My mother had a Singer and I got her machine when she got my grandmothers. I recently had to replace it and went with another Singer.

I have owned an older Singer - loved it, a Kenmore - worked beautiful but didn't last, a Husquvarna- it needed lots of servicing to keep working, I now own a Bernina and it is my favorite. Tough, reliable and I have only had to have it serviced once in 8 years and I just did it because I thought it would be a good idea.

I have a Brother machine, there are things I love and things I hate about it. I have heard really good things about Bernina's and Vikings but I don't know much about them. I'm in the process of saving up for a new one!
I have a Pfaff Grand Quilter and love it! It only a straight sticher, so it's not for everyone. But I have a couple of other machines for fancy stitching.
I love my middle-of-the-line Brother :) works great for simple quilts and children's clothing!

Great question. And I'm sure most of us will want to read the other posts ourselves. I've got an inexpensive Brother CS6000s [I think] and it's been great for a newby like me. Looked over some Babylocks a couple weeks back, and they look impressive but I don't know enough to know what to look for when investing that kind of money into a machine purchase. I've looked at Berninas and it felt like I was looking into an airplane cockpit... too many buttons and choices and just flatout overwhelming. Again, really great question.

I love my old Bernina 1530. I have often thought about getting another one with embroidery capabilities, but for a good work horse of a machine, I wouldn't trade it in for the world.
